Tip - Typhoon Grip Panel Swapping

Just FYI, anyone who does not like the "battle grips" of the Typhoon CAN switch them for something else. I have small hands and did not feel comfortable with the bulky grips. A friend of mine gave me some wooden "slab sided" grips off an old Grey Ghost to see if they would work. The grips sat for about 6 months or so before I actually did anything with them. Well, one day after swapping my son's Automag grips for some Smart Parts walnut grips, I decided to check out my Typhoon. Surprise, surprise! The Smart Parts grips fit the Typhoon, the retaining pins at the top of thr grip lined up perfectly...only needed to route out the channels for the air lines. Took the Grey Ghost grips and checked them out...same result. OK, let's get working! I have a Typhoon with vertical and bottom line setup. The bottom line bracket has the air lines running through and above the flats the grips set on so channeling/routing for the air lines was still required.

I like the "finger grooves", but only if they are individually fitted...a method I use is the same when doing grips for my days of IPSC .45 shooting; put grips on, dust your firing hand with talcum powder and grasp the grip as if firing. This transfers the location AND ANGLE of your fingers positions...you can then trace the outlines with an awl, scribe, whatever. You then take the grips off and begin removing wodd using tool of your choice (I used a drill with a "grinding" bit in it, followed by sandpaper wrapped around a pencil and small round file).

In my case, the grips are now thinner and allow me to put more finger on more trigger (less "short stroking"), better "natural pointing" ability with muzzle no longer canted to one side due to improper grip angle (bulkiness) and generally less finger fatigue as a result. Asthetics are improved (personal taste), and it FEELS like ROF has improved, but that may be TOTALLY subjective (I have been working on playing with what's in the hopper only, no extra guppies!).

OK, I'll quit ranting...just wanted to let the other Typhoon owners know that they can EASILY swap grip panels ala "bolt on" with a little work to create the air line channels. It seems any aftermarket grip panel for the stock Automag, Autococker, or Sheridan can be made to work once you account for the air lines.

(KotL's note- the last paragraph was confirmed with Glenn. Any replacement grips for stock Automag or Autococker grip frames will work on the Typhoon once the air lines are drilled or carved out.)
